Freshman outruns all SCIAC opponents, setting D3 record in debut race

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Sara Wanous set a Division III school record on Saturday, leading the Chapman University women's cross country team to an 11th place finish at the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational. Wanous outpaced all SCIAC opponents with a record time of 18:39.7 in the women's 5k race as the Panthers finished ahead of five SCIAC schools with a score of 299.

The Long Beach, Calif. native finished 21st overall in her debut performance, besting the previous Division III school record of 18:53, posted by Kelly Crampton in 2004, and coming in two seconds shy of the all-time school record set by Carla Figueroa in 1987.

Also contributing to Chapman's impressive finish were fellow freshmen Cathryne Ramirez (20:02.1), who shaved 40 seconds off her collegiate debut time from last week and Jessica Selby (20:27.2), who finished in the top 100 in her debut race. Less than one year after finishing ninth in the SCIAC Championships, the young squad caught the attention of its conference foes, finishing third out of the eight competing SCIAC teams.

Meanwhile, the men's cross country team saw great improvement over their first race as all four runners bested their season debut times by more than 45 seconds. Sophomore Chris Reid led the way, finishing in 27:13.5, followed by Charles Thimesch (28:44.1), Hugo Flores (29:14.6) and Josh Nudelman (31:17.6).
