Wanous sets 6k school record at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman runner Sara Wanous took down another school record on Saturday, finishing the 6k race in 23:36.2 as the Chapman University women's cross country team earned a ninth place finish at the Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country Invitational.

Three weeks after setting Chapman's Division III 5k record in her debut race, Wanous shaved nine seconds off the 6k record set by Kelly Crampton (23:45) in 2002. The Long Beach, Calif. native was followed up by fellow freshman Cathryne Ramirez (24:17.4), sophomore Courtney Pascual (25:48.1) and freshman Jessica Selby (25:56.3).

The Panthers, who finished last in the conference a season ago, finished ahead of two SCIAC opponents on Saturday. With 246 points, Chapman ranked ahead of La Verne and Caltech just one meet after finishing ahead of five SCIAC schools in the UC Riverside Invite.

In the men's race, sophomore Chris Reid paced the Panthers, shaving 23 seconds off his season best time by finishing the 8k race in 26:50.4. Freshman Charles Thimesch came in behind Reid with a time of 27:59.2. The sophomore duo of Josh Nudelman (30:44.7) and Hugo Flores (30:53.2) rounded out the Panthers' field.

The Chapman men and women will enter SCIAC competition in two weeks when they race at the SCIAC Multi-Duals at La Mirada Park on Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
