Chapman finishes seventh at CSUSB Invite

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's cross country teams toed the line at the California State University of San Bernardino Invite for the first time in program history. Both the men's and women's team finished seventh overall.

Leading the men's team across the finish line was freshman Elijah Orr with a team-best of 26:53.08 to finish 12th in the meet.

Crossing the line second for the Panthers was freshman Chris Pai who recorded a final mark of 28:04.88. Just four seconds behind Pai, rookie Ben Wasserman earned a spot in the top-45 with a final time of 28:08.57.

Freshman Drake Butler crossed the line with a final mark of 28:22.50, maintaining an average mile pace of 5:42.5.  Rounding out the Panthers top-five was rookie Erick Garcia who earned a final mark of 29:22.40.   

The Panthers finished with a total time of 2:20:51.43 for an average course time of 28:10.29 in the 8K.

On the women's side Michiko Yee paced the Panthers in their first 5K of the season finishing 44th with a final time of 20:44.54. The women's team finished with a total time of 1:45:18.06, for an average pace of 21:03.62.

The highlight on the women's side was an eight-second gap between the No. 2 runner and the No. 7 runner for Chapman. Freshman Avery Cardosi finished just 10 spots behind Yee with a final mark of 21:04.0 to earn the No. 2 spot for Chapman. While sophomore Gigi Vujovich finished a final mark of 21:11.22 in the No. 7 spot.

Senior Cathryne Ramirez and sophomores Mia Hernandez, Nika Cokas and Vujovich all finished within two seconds of each other to capture spots 60-63.

Chapman will compete in its first SCIAC meet of the season at La Mirada, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 1. The men will toe the line in the SCIAC Multi-Dual at 9 a.m. and the women will begin their race shortly after at 9:45 a.m.
