Softball earns six All-Independent selections

The Chapman University softball team had six players named to the 2010 All-Independent softball team as announced by the Association of Division III Independents on Thursday. The awards included three Panthers – seniors Dani Brown, Melanie Villarroel and freshman Kerry Peterson – who earned first team honors.

Jarvis named to All-West Region team

Chapman University softball player Jayme Jarvis has been named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-West Region team. The sophomore designated player earned first team honors and was the lone Panther represented among the region’s best players.

Mercifully, seniors go out in style with sweep of Dallas

The Chapman University softball team wrapped the season with a pair of mercy rule victories 9-1 and 9-1 over visiting University of Dallas at El Camino Real Park on Saturday. The Panthers’ victories put an exclamation point on an equally festive day where Chapman and the City of Orange celebrated the official grand re-opening of El Camino Real Park, followed by a ceremony for five Panthers seniors playing in the final games of their careers.

The City of Orange and the Chapman University softball team host the Grand Re-Opening ceremony of El Camino Real Park on Saturday, May 1 at 11 a.m. introducing the newly-renovated park and softball complex. Following the ceremony, Chapman plays its final games of the season with a doubleheader against the University of Dallas beginning at noon.

Softball's upset bid foiled; losing streak reaches nine

A four-run seventh inning by the visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College softball team spoiled Chapman University's bid at an upset over the No. 13-ranked Athenas. Claremont rallied to win Game 2 5-4 earning the doubleheader sweep over the Panthers after winning Game 1 6-3 at El Camino Real Park on Thursday night.

Panthers come up short at home against Vanguard

The Chapman University softball team dropped a pair of games to cross-county rival Vanguard University on Thursday afternoon. The visiting Lions used an eight-run seventh inning to turn an otherwise close game into a 12-2 win in the first game, then rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Panthers 4-3 in Game 2.

Break-even March comes to an end at Sun West

In what has become characteristic of the Chapman University softball team in 2010, the Panthers split their Sun West Tournament-ending doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Hart Park, defeating St. Olaf College (Minn.) 13-3 and losing to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) 3-2 in eight innings. Chapman (14-12) finished the month of March with a 9-9 record, including a 7-7 mark in the tournament.

Mistakes, missed opportunities haunt Panthers

The Chapman University softball team lost a pair of games at the Sun West Tournament on Monday afternoon at Hart Park. The Panthers dropped Game 1 to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) 7-2; committing five errors in the game, and then dropped a heartbreaker to Hamline University (Minn.) 6-5 after stranding 10 runners on base.

The Chapman University softball team got a boost from its starting pitching on Saturday afternoon with a pair of one-hitters and 21 strikeouts against visiting St. Catherine University (Minn.), beating the Wildcats 8-0 and 4-1 at El Camino Real Park. After a leadoff single in Game 1, St. Catherine didn’t get another hit off Chapman pitching until a two-out single in the sixth inning of Game 2.

The Panthers’ recent hot-hitting came to a screeching halt on Monday afternoon as the Chapman University softball team was shutout for the first time this season – on just four hits – by Linfield College (Ore.) 5-0 at the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park. Chapman’s offense exploded in its first game of the day with a 10-0 win over Williams College (Mass.)

The Chapman University softball team put a loss with an unusual ending behind it and came back to defeat St. Mary’s University (Minn.) 4-2 to earn a Saturday split at the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park. The Panthers dropped Game 1 to Cal State San Marcos 7-3 in a contest shortened to five innings due to a pair of dysfunctional light towers.

Weather not the only thing heating up as softball wins a pair

With the mercury reaching 80-plus degrees at the Sun West Tournament on Tuesday, the Chapman University softball team also turned up the heat with a pair of wins. The Panthers came-from-behind to defeat Pacific University (Ore.) 4-3 and then handed University of Puget Sound (Wash.) a 7-3 loss at Hart Park to improve to 9-7 overall this season.

Panthers stay even with another tournament split

The Chapman University softball team defeated DeSales University (Pa.) 6-1 on Thursday afternoon, but couldn’t rally for a second victory, dropping the late game 7-6 to Holy Names University in the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park. The Panthers have earned splits in five of their seven doubleheaders this season and are now 2-2 in tournament play.

The 2010 Chapman University women’s softball team has already proved a knack for late-inning rallies and comebacks just 12 games into the season. On Wednesday however, another Panthers’ rally wasn’t quite enough to earn a sweep against visiting opponents Wheaton College (Ill.) and Penn State Abington at the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park.
