Panthers split dual meets with Lock Haven and Biola

ORANGE, Calif. – Hosting a pair of scholarship programs, the Chapman University women's swimming and diving team held its own at the Allred Aquatics Center on Saturday, placing second between Division II Lock Haven University (Pa.) and NAIA counterpart Biola University.

Strong performances from freshman Alex Carubis and sophomore Julie Case, who combined for three first place finishes and one second place, helped the Panthers defeat Biola 184-116 in dual scores, while losing to Lock Haven 176-138 head-to-head.

The Chapman women also swept the diving competition against Biola. Senior Fernanda Gallo Moreno captured first place in the 3 meter springboard event with a score of 171.3. Just 10 points separated first, second and third places in the event with sophomore Kiernan Gilbert grabbing third with a 161.3 score.

Gilbert went on to earn first place in the 1 meter springboard with a score of 209.55, followed by Moreno in second place with 160.55.

Coming off two record-breaking races at the UNLV Invite last month, Carubis was on her mark once again. She finished just 7 seconds off her own school record pace in the 400 yard individual medley to place first in the event on Saturday with a time of 4:48.96. The rookie was more than 13 seconds better than the rest of the field, winning handily.

Carubis followed that with a finish of 2:29.64 in the 200 yard breaststroke, less than 2 seconds off her Chapman record, and good enough for second place in the event. Junior Sami McLaughlin came in fourth place with a time of 2:35.05.

Case claimed the top spot in both of her races on Saturday, winning the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.12, as well as the 500 yard freestyle – an event she currently holds the Chapman record in – with a time of 5:28.34.

The Panthers' 400 yard medley relay team of Carubis, Case, McLaughlin and junior Amanda Morris placed second with a time of 4:16.93. Morris also earned third place in the 200 yard backstroke with a finish of 2:19.55.
