Panthers' divers provide highlights in team loss to Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – After winning its first home event of the season, the Chapman University women's swimming and diving team dropped a 232-119 decision to Pomona-Pitzer at the Allred Olympic Pool on Saturday. The men's team came up short as well, falling to the Sagehens by a final tally of 225-74.

The Chapman divers outperformed their competition on Friday as senior Bobby Herrman and Jamie Ralph supplemented the Panthers' sole individual swimming victory. Herrman, a first-year diver for coach Robbie McLellan, earned first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competition, recording scores of 192.35 and 201, respectively. Meanwhile, Ralph earned victories from both distances as well, scoring a 180.85 in the 1-meter set and a career-best 198.25 in the 3-meter.

Chapman's only individual swimming victory on Saturday came from Taylor Ford, who outpaced his competition in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.22 seconds.

Junior sprinter Kirsten Spicer, who recorded a season-best time in the 50-yard freestyle a week ago, came up 0.28 seconds shy of setting that mark again, finishing third overall (25.79).

Sophomore Ali Marchand used a strong finish in the 100-yard breaststroke to finish second, setting a season-best mark at 1:14.20.

Freshman Miles Furuichi added another strong showing for the Panthers men's team, coming in second place in the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:05.74.

Chapman will be back in the pool tomorrow, taking on Mills and Caltech in Pasadena at 11 a.m. The 2013-14 home schedule will conclude on Feb. 1 as the Panthers host Caltech at 11 a.m.
