Women's swim & dive earns big win over La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's swimming and diving team earned an important road victory over University of La Verne 109-105 while the men's team came up short 129-76 at the La Verne Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Junior sprinter Kirsten Spicer led the way for the Panther women, winning the 100-yard freestyle with a season-fastest time of 55.92. Spicer came in second place in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall only seven tenths of a second out of first place and four tenths of a second slower than her season-best time.

Distance swimmer senior Julie Case continued her strong senior season with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Fellow Panther junior Emily Holmquist came in third in the same event. Holmquist would go on to add another third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. The Chapman women also doubled up on the podium in the 200-yard backstroke as sophomore Kate Staskus and freshman Claire Fieweger finished in first and second place, respectively.

Junior Michelle Hutchins swam to two second-place finishes on the day. Hutchins finished just out of first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly.

Chapman freshman Austin Roberts led the men with a pair of first-place finishes. Roberts took first place in the men's 1,000-yard freestyle. His time of 5:21:81 in the 500-yard freestyle bested the nearest competitor by almost nine seconds.

Anton Ketterer added the only other men's first-place finish, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:39.20.

Chapman swim and dive teams will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they take on Caltech at home at 11 a.m. It is the final home meet of the season for the Panthers, who will honor their seniors during the event.
