Panthers swim, dive into tie for fourth in SCIAC

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's swimming and diving team earned an important win over visiting Caltech on Saturday, climbing into a three-way tie for fourth place in the SCIAC standings with one more dual match remaining before the conference championships. The Panthers defeated Caltech 168-43, while the men fell to the Beavers 106-90 at the Allred Pool.

With three dual wins this season in SCIAC competition, the Chapman women moved into a tie for fourth place and will conclude the regular season on Saturday against Occidental and Redlands on the road in Redlands. With one dual win this year, the men are currently tied for seventh.

The Panther women earned the win convincingly thanks to some swimmers earning points in events they hadn't competed in yet this year, as well as some familiar faces in familiar races.

On 'Senior Day' honoring three Panther seniors in their final home meet, senior Julie Case captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.89 swimming for the first time this year. Case is not unfamiliar with the event however, capturing the school record last March.

Also swimming in an event for the first time this season, sophomore Alex Little earned a win in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:12.82. Sophomore Maddy Reeves was three seconds faster than her season-best time in the 500-yard freestyle, earning first place with a time of 5:43.62.

Junior Paige Watroba earned first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.83, earning her career-best in the event. And freshman sprinter Vivian Jiang earned a career-best mark of 59.78 in the 100-yard freestyle.

On the diving board, Chapman swept the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions on both the men's and women's side as sophomore Jamie Ralph and senior Bobby Herrman led the way. Ralph earned scores of 154.8 (1-meter) and 183.1 (3-meter) on her way to a pair of wins.

Herrman posted season-high scores in both the 1-meter (234.4) and 3-meter (221.45) springboard events to capture first place in both. His 3-meter inward 2 1/2 somersaults in tuck registered a 47.25 combined score from the judges – his best on the day.
