Freshmen stand out in double dual

ORANGE, Calif. – Several freshmen were the standout performers of the Chapman University men's and women's swimming & diving teams on Saturday. The Panthers took on SCIAC foe Pomona-Pitzer and out-of-conference foe Whitman in a double dual.

The Chapman women tied Whitman 138-138 but fell 219-71 to Pomona-Pitzer as all three teams are scored head-to-head while competing in combined events in a double dual. The Chapman men fell 197-57 to Whitman and 241-40 to Pomona-Pitzer.

On the women's side, freshmen diver Kellyn Toole took first in both diving events to bring home a couple of event wins. She scored a 240.10 on the 1-meter board and a 228.05 in the 3-meter to capture both event titles.

In the pool, freshman Kristina Fong finished in the top-4 in all three of her events. She finished highest in 100 back, taking second overall with a 1:01.56. Her time of 25.91 in the 50 free took third overall while she took fourth in the 200 back.

Sophomore Mary Welton also stood out in the long distance events. She took second in the mile with a time of 19:14.86 and second overall in the 500 free with a 5:37.02. The women's 200 free relay team of Martina Exlerova, Rachel Isaacs, Lauren Alvarado and Fong took third with a 1:44.02 to end the meet.

Freshman Connor Broughton continued to lead the Panthers on the men's side, along with fellow freshman Quinn Gates. Broughton took third overall in the 200 IM with a 2:04.37 and earned fourth-place in the 200 fly, coming in at 2:01.98. Gates was fourth overall in the 50 free with a 22.38.

The Panthers continue a busy January when they host Mills College next Saturday at 11 a.m.
