Panthers put together strong outing against SCIAC competition

WHITTIER, Calif. –The Chapman University men's and women's swim and dive teams competed against Pomona-Pitzer College and Whittier College on Saturday with several swimmers earning season-bests and competing in new strokes.

Sophomore Quinn Gates finished third in the 50 free, falling just behind Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier by less than a second with a time of 21.98, setting a season best. Gates also came in fifth place in the 100 free maintaining a pace of 23.61 to earn a final time of 50.37.

Rookies Richard Parnell and Chase Mitchell both placed in each of their races. Parnell finished third in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.82 and seventh in the 100 fly. His time of 56:40 in the fly shave a two full seconds off of his previous season best. Mitchell placed fourth overall in the 500 free with a mark of 4:58.03 recording a season best. He also competed in the 1000 free for the first time this and place third, reaching the wall at the 10:21.54 mark.

The women's side saw three Panthers take second place. Senior Martina Exlerova took second in the 50 free with a final time of 24.88. Rookie Teresa Gerhold also found the podium in the 200 free with a final time of 2:01.64, just half a second behind the first place finisher from Pomona-Pitzer.  Sprinting her way to second in the 100 fly was freshman Molly Davis who captured a season best of 59.50.

In the 100 free rookie Saranna Quach, Gerhold and Exlerova finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively, coming within less than a second of each other to finish under the one-minute mark.

Gerhold also finished third in the 500 free with a final time of 5:31.84, and Quach finished fourth in the 50 yard back with a time of 29.08.

On the diving side, freshman Caitlyn Jaquemart placed third overall in the 1-meter with a final score of 166.15.

The Panthers will host Caltech on Sat. Nov. 19 in their first home meet.
