Season best performances lead to women’s win over La Verne and Mills

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's swim and dive team defeated La Verne 146-90 and Mills College 182-40 in a dual meet at La Verne on Saturday earning the Panthers second win of the season. The men's team fell 139-74 to the Leopards despite several season-best performances.

After scoring NCAA qualifying marks at Claremont last week, sophomore Kellyn Toole followed up her CU record-breaking performance with a pair of wins against La Verne and Mills. Toole scored 275.24 on the 1-meter and 282.50 in the 3-meter to capture first on both.

The Panthers went one-two-three on the one-meter after freshmen Caitlyn Jaquemart and Rebecca DeAngelis scored career-bests marks of 206.15 and 203.25, respectively.

Chapman captured one-two-three in the 1650 free as well. Junior Mary Welton paced the Panthers with a season-best time of 18:49.31. Freshman Sabrina Evanson finished just milliseconds behind her earning a career-best 18:49.82 and freshman Teresa Gerhold captured third with her career-best 19:18.42.

Freshman Sara Quach nabbed a pair of wins for Chapman in the 50 free and the 200 back. Quach finished first in the 50 with a time of 25.54 and first in the 200 with a final mark of 2:12.24.

Freshman Molly Davis sprinted to first in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.48. Davis also swam a career-best 2:16.34 in the 200 fly to earn second.

Breaking the one-minute mark, sophomore Kristina Fong took first in the 100 free with a season-best time of 55.72. Fong also led the Panthers into first place in the 200 relay. The sophomore teamed up with Davis, junior Rachel Isaacs and freshman anchor Natalie Neffner to earn a time of 1:44.31.

On the men's side, freshman Chase Mitchell swam into second on the 1650 free with a career-best time of 17:13.38. Mitchell also earned first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.90.

The Panthers finished second and third in the 50 free. Sprinter Quinn Gates earned second with a time of 22.45, followed by freshman Jason Afriat who finished third earning a time of 23.70.

In the 200 IM, freshman Michael Jahangani swam a time of 2:16.70 to earn second. Freshman Crosby Tinucci reached the podium in the 200 back, grabbing the wall at 2:06.99 to earn second.

Chapman has just two meets left to prepare for the SCIAC Championships. The Panthers will begin preparation at home in the Allred Pool on Saturday, January 28. Chapman will host Occidental in a SCIAC dual set for 10 a.m.
