Toole takes second, records fall on day one

COMMERCE, Calif. – Sophomore diver Kellyn Toole took second on the 1-meter board and two school records fell on day one of the SCIAC Championships. The women's team is in fourth and the men's team is in ninth in the day standings after the first few events.

Toole began the day with the prelims and finals on the 1-meter board. She posted a final score of 459.85 to take second in her first of two events. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Maia Presti recorded a 504.35 to win the title.

The swimming events began with a pair of relays – the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. Records immediately began falling as the women's 200 medley relay shattered the previous record set last year. Freshman Sarah Quach, junior Mary Welton, junior Rachel Isaacs and sophomore Kristina Fong combined for a 1:50.26, breaking the previous Chapman record of 1:52.05. Chapman took sixth in the event.

The men's team took ninth in both relay events but made school history in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:13.02 – more than a second ahead of the previous record. Freshman Richard Parnell led off the event, followed by classmate Chase Mitchell, junior Jake Weber and sophomore Connor Broughton.

Freshman Molly Davis broke one more school record, leading off the women's 800 free relay with a school record time of 1:53.92 in her 200 yard leg. The team took fifth with a time 7:54.75.

The bulk of the events happen over the next three days with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay on tomorrow's schedule.
