Tanizaki-Hudson sets school record in first SCIAC dual

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Kiana Tanizaki-Hudson shattered the 100 fly school record to highlight the Chapman University swimming & diving teams first SCIAC dual meet of the season. Both men's and women's Panther teams defeated Whittier in the double dual but fell to Pomona-Pitzer.

Tanizaki-Hudson swam a 57.64 in the 100 fly to take first in the event and previous Chapman record of 57.93. She also won the 200 IM with a 2:11.60.

Sophomore McKenzie Abbott recorded an NCAA Regional qualifying mark with a score of 256.8 on the 1-meter board. She placed second to lead a quartet of consecutive finishes from the Panthers' women divers. Sydney Rabuchin led the Panthers on the 3-meter board with a score of 228.65.

Freshman Bryce Grover won two events for the men's team, sweeping the backstroke events. He won the 100 back with a 55.43 and the 200 back with a 1:59.84. Sophomore Cole Kershner added another event win for the men's team with a 21.51 in the 50 free. Long distance freshman Zach Waddell took second in both the 1000 and 500 free.

The women's team led off the day with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay with a group of newcomers setting the tone and leading throughout the day. Sophomore Marah Kane led off the relay with freshmen Megan Kluck, Tanizaki-Hudson and Avery Hall following. The group put together a 4:02.7 to take second in the event – just 0.33 seconds behind the winning team from Pomona-Pitzer.

Kane went on to win the 200 back with a 2:12.90. Kluck took second in the 100 breast with a 1:09.04. Hall was third in the 200 free with a 2:00.35.

The day ended with the 200 free relay and both the men's and women's teams took second to finish off a solid day in the first SCIAC dual.

The Panthers make their 2021 home debut next week to take on Caltech and CMS at 11 a.m.
