Mirro wins two titles, track & field teams take third at Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. – Sophomore Maddie Mirro won two events and the Chapman University track & field teams combined for seven total event wins at the SCIAC Championships on Friday. Both the men's and women's teams ended the meet with 42 points and both took third place.

Mirro's SCIAC titles came in the 1500 meter and 800 meter runs. She finished well ahead of the competition in the 1500m, clocking in at 4:43.22. In the 800m, she led a trio of Panthers in front of the pack. Mirro's 2:21.99 won the event and she was followed by Jordan Diaz in second and Katie Hansen in third for Chapman podium sweep.

Senior Gabi Siguenza ran a 1:07.85 in the 400 meter hurdles to take the SCIAC title and the first All-SCIAC honors of her career. She captured nearly a three second win in the event.

Anthony Hart captured a SCIAC title in the men's steeplechase as he ran well ahead of his competition with a time of 9:50.88. He came in with a nearly seven second PR, which is also the fastest steeplechase since Chapman revived the men's track & field program less than 10 years ago.

Freshman Daniel Schwaiger and Chris Dyckman captured the other two SCIAC titles for the men's team. Schwaiger won the long jump for the Panthers with a leap of 6.45 meters (21-feet, 2-inches). Dyckman won the javelin with a throw of 46.95 meters (154-feet), surpassing the rest of the field by seven meters. He also set the best mark in Chapman's Division III history.

Junior Maija Girardi made it a Chapman sweep of the javelin throw as she captured the SCIAC title in the women's javelin. She hurled the javelin 34.54 meters (113-feet, 4-inches) to earn her second All-SCIAC honor in as many tries.

The Panthers found there to the podium in several more events. Senior Emma Eglinton took second in the steeplechase with a 12:31.27 and Collette Lusin took third in the 400 meter run.

In the men's 400m, Jordan Walton and Moises Brito finished 2-3 for the Panthers and less than half a second apart. Walton clocked in at 51.62 while Brito was right behind at 51.98. Michael Crumby took third in the 110 meter hurdles. Alec Desuasido and Schwaiger both performed well in the triple jump as Desuasido took second with a mark of 12.87 meters and Schwaiger was third at 12.81 meters.

Aiden White took on a tough task in running the 10k in the morning and 5k in the evening and placed fourth in both events to grab a couple of points for the Panthers.

The women's relay team finished the meet off with some fireworks and a second-place finish with a time of 4:12.23.

The Redlands Last Chance meet on May 19-20 will give some Panthers one last chance to compete and qualify for the national championship meet.
