Track and field competes in first 2022 meet

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their 2022 season today at the OIDFE Challenge meet at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Sophomore Daniel Schwaiger secured an event win in the long jump while freshman Adva Shilon kicked off her Panther career with a first place finish in the high jump.

 Schwaiger picked up right where he left off the shortened 2021 season – an event win in the long jump. Schwaiger recorded a mark of 6.18 meters to win the event. Sophomore Alec Desuasido competed alone in the triple jump but wasn't far off the best mark in Chapman's Division III history with a jump of 12.92 meters. 

 Sophomore Jesse McMillan began his season with a personal-best and the best mark in Chapman's Division III history when he cleared 4.1 meters to take third. Sophomore Sean Longley placed second in the shot put with a heave of 12.92 meters, which was half of an inch behind the event leader from CMS. 

 Shilon made a strong debut for the women's team, winning the high jump with a near Chapman record. Shilon cleared 1.55 meters to take the event win and was just .05 meters off the school record. She also took fifth in the long jump with a jump of 4.43 meters. 

Freshman Proud Kitnitchiva led her Chapman debut and took third in the 400 meter dash with a 1:05.95. Junior Maddie Mirro secured sixth for the women's team in the one mile race and hit a 5:25.26 while sophomore Kayla Almeida trailed close behind and took 13th with a 5:54.41.

Sophomore Grace Coleman kicked off the 2022 season with a 10th place finish in the 3000 meter race for the women's team, she ran a 11:14.21. Khyra Stiner secured a fifth place finish in the in the women's 60 meter hurdles with a 10.49 while Shilon took sixth with a 10.55.

The Chapman women's and men's 4x400 meter relay teams both took third in the meet. The women's team consisted of Kaylee Smith, Katarina Maric, Stiner, and Carly Trent. Together they ran a 4:19.98. The men's team consisted of Matt Bozorgi, Aidan Millsap, Moises Brito, and Ewen Shen. Together they ran a 3:32.23.

Chapman took second in the women's distance medley with a crew of Mirro, Almeida, Jordan Diaz and Kaylee Smith. The team finished with a 13:06.24. The Panther men's team also secured third in the distance medley with a team of Zach Leith, Chase Shanafelt, Shen, and Gill Bothwell with a time of 11:44.25

Four Panthers placed in the top ten in the men's 60 meter dash with Josh Drake taking fifth with a 7.45, August Potier took sixth with a 7.45, Millsap took seventh with 7.59 and Sam Thompson took ninth with a 7.62.  Donovan Wilson kicked off his senior season and took fourth in the 200 meter dash with a 22.95

Junior Michael Crumby took fourth in the 60 meter hurdles and ran a 9.20 while fellow Panther Freshman Matt Becker followed in fifth with a 9.24 in his Chapman debut.

The Panthers pick back up on Fri., Feb 3 and compete in the Riverside Early Bird meet at Riverside Community College.
