Bio

Greg Stull joined the Chapman coaching staff for the 2023 track & field season to coach the pole vaulters.

A native of Fullerton, Calif., he began his pole vaulting career at Troy High School and won the CIF state championship his senior year. He was ranked second in the United States by the National High School Track All America for his consistency in winning 16 consecutive pole vault competitions. He won the CIF title with a 15'10" jump at UC Berkeley, and a Bronze Medal at the AAU Junior National Championships in San Jose, Calif. Additionally, he set records at a number a number of prestigious competitions including the Sunkist Indoor Invitational, Arcadia Invitiational, Orange County Track & Field Championships and Freeway League Finals. He was the CIF Div 3 Champion and CIF Masters Champion. He was named as the most consistent US Youth Pole Vaulter in 1980 after recieving coaching by UCLA legend Ron Mooers. He set a PR of 16'1" and is still a listed on the all time performer list in Orange County. Greg then joined the lengendary UCLA Track and Field program under James "Jim" Bush as teammate to National High School record holder Anothony Curran. He went on to become a four-year Varisity letterman eventually jumping 17'5" and earning several trips to the PAC-10 comference championships and a trip to the NCAA Division I National Champioships in Eugene, Ore. in 1985. His junior year he was on track to qualify for the US Olympic Trials in Track and Field but was thwarted by a severe hand injury as a result of a broken pole in the UCLA/USC Dual Meet in 1984. He retired from the pole vault after completing his senior year at UCLA, earning a Bechelor's degree in Mathematics and Applied Science. In 2010, Greg returned to pole vaulting as an assistant coach at Orange Lutheran High School under head coach Jack Preus with the goal of building a competitive pole vault program. By 2015, Greg had coached had coached vaulters to numerous school records and ultimately to two State championship titles (1 indoor and 1 outdoor), a #2 US ranking of High School Senior Carl Johansson by Track & Field news, two CIF Div 3 championships Titles and numerous league, invitiational and school records. Other notable vaulters included David Bean 16'4", Kevin Stull 15'10" and Carrie McCullom 12'4". In 2014, Orange Lutheran received the honor of being named one of the the top High School pole vault program in the United States by Athletic.net. In 2014, Greg coached Carl Johansson to a personal record of 17' and a CIF Pole Vault title. For the first time, the state championship meet had five contestants with PR's over 17'. Carl won the event with a first jump with a new PR of 17'. Coach Stull also has the distiction of being the first State Champion to coach an athlete to a pole vault State Championship title in California, a feat recently duplicated by his former teammate Anothony Curran who coached his son Tate to a state championship title. Coach Stull credits his successes to a number of notable world class coaches and former pole vaulters who were significant influences in his vaulting and coaching career. UCLA distance legend and four-time NCAA National Coach of the Year Bob Larsen of UCLA, Anthony Curran national record holder, 19-time German National Champion and four-time Olympian Gunther Lohre of West Germany and Brian Yokoyama of Mount San Antonio College. Over the course of his career, Coach Stull has been the recipient of a number of a prestigious awards including UCLA's Ron Copeland Memorial Outstanding Performance or the Year while at UCLA in 1984 for a double PR from 16'9" to a new PR 17'5" in rain conditions at the UCLA/Oregon dual meet in 1984 to a second place finish to future US Olympian Cory Tarpenning at 17'8". Greg also was awarded the Ron McNulty Excellence in Coaching Award from United States Soccer Federation during his National Coaching license course at the US Soccer National Training Center on the Califonia State Dominguez Hill Campus in 2008. Greg is married to Theresa Harper, a notable swimmer at El Dorado High School and teammate of Olympian Janet Evans. Greg and Theresa have been married for 32 years and have three children Kevin, Cory and Michael and a dog named Murphy and they live in Yorba Linda, Calif. Greg is currently working on his Master's Degree in Computer Science at the Georgia Institue of Technology in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. His research interests are in applying artificial intelligence to the problem of identification and reporting of technical breakdowns in the pole vault.
