Mirro ready to run at NCAA Championships

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Maddie Mirro will become the second female runner in program history to represent Chapman University at the NCAA Division III Championships when the starting gun sounds on Saturday. Mirro earned her spot in the national meet with a 12th-place finish at regionals last week.

The championship meet will almost be a return home for the Fishers, Ind. native. Her hometown outside of Indianapolis is just two hours north of the Louisville, Ky. course where the national championship will be run.

To get to the championship race, Mirro ran a personal-best 22:35.8 at the NCAA Division III Regionals last week. She is just the second person in Chapman women's cross country history to run a 6k race under 23 minutes and just 11 seconds off the school record set by Arabella Reece in 2018. Reece is the only other Panther to qualify for the national championship in program history.

As a freshman, Mirro posted a best time of 23:41.6 in the 6k. With the pandemic wiping out all fall sports in 2020, Mirro still managed to drop over one minute off her time this season to make program history as a nationals qualifier.

Mirro and the rest of the field will line up at 9 a.m. (PT) at E.P Tom Sawyer State Park for the final race of the season.
