Another school record, medal for Case at SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. – On Day 1 of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Brenda Villa Aquatics Center on Friday, it was senior distance swimmer Julie Case who grabbed the spotlight for Chapman University. Case broke her own school record in the 500-yard freestyle and placed third in the event with a time of 5:03.81.

The SCIAC medal is the second of her career, having taken first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle last year. She'll be a favorite in the 1,650 event once again on Sunday.

Case broke her own two-year old record (5:05.02 in 2012) in the 500 free by more than a second and just missed the NCAA's 'B' cut for qualifying for the national championships. Case got off the blocks quickly and held onto third place at every turn, narrowly missing second place by a little over a second.

The senior is Chapman's record holder in the 200-, 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle events and also a member of two relay records in the 400- and 800-yard freestyles.

After the first full day of competition, the Chapman women are in seventh place overall. The championships continue all day Saturday and Sunday.
