In addition to reaching the NCAA Division III postseason for the ninth consecutive year in 2008-09, the Chapman University women’s basketball team broke into the WBCA Academic Top-25 national rankings this season. The Panthers captured the No. 23 spot in the Division III poll with a 3.379 overall team grade-point average.

Jue to be honored by Chinese Historical Society

Chapman University women’s basketball coach Carol Jue will be honored by the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, at a gala celebrating Chinese Americans in sports. Jue, who has been the Panthers’ head coach since 2003, is the only Chinese head coach in NCAA basketball – men’s or women’s.

Hayman named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team

Women’s basketball player Niki Hayman has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team for the first time in her career. Chapman University senior was selected to the third team despite missing the second half of the season due to a broken foot. Hayman becomes the 12th student-athlete in Chapman’s Division III history to earn Academic All-America honors.

Kamiyama earns All-West Region honors

Chapman University senior PG Lauren Kamiyama has been selected to the D3Hoops.com All-West Region team after helping the Panthers to their ninth consecutive NCAA Division III postseason tournament. Kamiyama becomes the first Panther since Melody Bongiorno in 2003-04 to win the award.

Chapman pair earns ESPN Academic All-District honors

Despite missing half of the season with a broken foot, Chapman University senior G Niki Hayman was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII women’s basketball team last month as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hayman was joined on the team by sophomore G Christina Ly, who earned the award for the first time in her career.

In honor of that feat, and leading the Panthers to a 20-9 overall record, head coach Carol Jue was named Association of Division III Independents Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.

With its full-court pressure, the Chapman University women’s basketball team held visiting La Sierra University to 35 points – a season-low for the Panthers’ defense – en route to a 63-35 victory on Saturday night at the Hutton Sports Center. Five of Chapman’s six seniors combined for 25 points to lead a balanced scoring attack in the win.

The Chapman University women’s basketball team won for the 10th time in its last 11 games, sweeping a pair of games in the Division III Independents Round Robin Tournament hosted by U.C. Santa Cruz over the weekend. The Panthers defeated the University of Dallas on Saturday night 61-47 and then beat the host Banana Slugs 67-46 on Sunday.

As a freshman, Lauren Kamiyama watched senior Gayle Sonoda break Chapman’s all-time assists record. Four years later, Kamiyama climbed past Sonoda and now sits alone at the top. The senior point guard dished out seven assists against La Sierra University on Saturday as the Chapman University women’s basketball team defeated the host Golden Eagles 81-77.

Using its depth, the Chapman University women’s basketball team cruised to 72-42 victory over La Sierra University on Saturday night at the Hutton Sports Center as 14 Panther players scored points. Chapman pressured the Golden Eagles into 31 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 36-23 en route to their seventh straight victory. During the current win streak the Panthers have outscored their opponents by an average of nearly 16 points per game.
